The Perfect Home Office Space

Whether you are a stay-at-home mom running a blog, landed the best work-from-home job there is, or just need a separate space to organize your life, an at home office is a great idea. A personal space where you can feel in control, organized and productive is essential for those who need to get things done in a timely fashion, and in this article I will discuss everything you need to make it the best space possible. (and we're going to make it a lot more welcoming than your cubicle)
Now, depending on the type of work that you are going to be doing in this space will directly influence the color that you should choose; in my last article Create an Awe-Inspiring Nursery I briefly touched on what colors fuel what emotions and it is no different for an office space.
Go ahead and google "most productive color" and I can guarantee you will find hundreds of pages explaining why blue is the most productive color, and this is absolutely right. If you are, say, an accountant, blue would suit your home office space perfectly - blue stimulates the mind and promotes productivity.

As far as furniture and necessities go for a home office, you will obviously first and foremost need your computer - be it a desktop or a laptop - and a space for that computer. Don't convince yourself that it is okay for you to lounge on the couch with the tv on and three children running around screaming your name when you have a deadline to meet at 12pm! You need a space for your computer. Storage space and organizational spaces are going to be key in this space, a cluttered room makes for a cluttered mind. Keep furnishings and decor simple and clean; a desk, a chair, perhaps a bookshelf and that's it.

Now, that doesn't mean that you can't hang photos of your family or inspirational quotes on the wall, does it motivate you? Hang it up. Is it a neon bud light sign? Please leave it out of your office. Bring things into your office that will keep your drive going, motivate and inspire you. Plants are always a good thing to have in any room - green is a visually meditative, calming color; plants can improve air quality and reduce stress!

Adequate lighting will also play a major role in productivity, steer clear of moody lighting, dimming lights and anything warm or fluorescent that will make you feel sleepy or distracted. I always suggest natural lighting bulbs, they trick the mind into thinking it is daytime, whether it is or not, and will provide great lighting for reading.

Turn off your cellphone. Try to keep as little distracting objects as possible in the room; if your phone keeps sending you facebook notifications, I will bet you won't get anything done. If you're opening up other tabs to do some online shopping, I bet you won't get anything done. Besides creating a space to work in, you have to adjust your own mindset to working mode as well. If you absolutely need a phone to work, think about getting a landline that you can work with, the benefit? It doesn't have Candy Crush on it.

  1. I created an office/studio space last year and it was one of the best moves I've made. I spend hours in there getting my work done and I love it. It also cut down on my TV watching because I used to work in my living room with the TV constantly playing in the background. No more!

  3. When days get long, I like to have some food nearby in my office (which isn't at home.) Popcorn and fruit make great wake-me-up snacks.
