As a designer I get asked day in and day out:
"Why do I need to hire you?"
I hear:
"I'm creative, I can do it myself"
"Designers are too expensive"
While the question is logical, and the comments may be true in some cases, what people fail to realize is that you're hiring a professional for that very reason: they are a professional. Designers may charge a seemingly high hourly rate or a flat rate that makes you take a step back but they are saving you money in the long run. How?
They're Learning You
A good interior designer takes the time to get to know you before they begin anything else. I want to know what you love, what you hate, I want to know all about your lifestyle, what gets you through the day and what voids need filling in your life (*changes title to therapist*). By doing this, I can actually hear from you what it is that you need and the differences between what you want and what will work for you. Though you may have the ability to go into Home Goods and buy everything you love, will it work for you and your lifestyle? Will you actually get use out of it? Orrrrrr, is it going to collect dust and never be touched and there goes $100. I'll guess its the latter.
Designers Have Connections
Being a professional means networking all the time. It means that they have companies who give them discounts for being a regular customer of theirs or just for being a professional with a business card. While some designers may not extend their discounts out to their clients because it eats into their profit, some do! It never hurts to ask, whether they extend to you the full discount or offer to split it with you, you may end up saving a lot of money on some really great pieces.
Quality Over Quantity
Designers know the true meaning behind quality over quantity; while I deal with a lot of clients who are on a budget or who just aren't truly aware of how much things actually cost, I can understand when I come to them with a design plan and furniture pieces and they're taken aback by the cost of it, but what I am able to explain to them is, yea the area rug that you picked out from Walmart does look similar, but the quality of the product will not last you nearly as long as an option I may have given you and will wear down and cause you to have to buy a whole new one in just a year (should've spent While I am all about assisting my clients in getting what they want on a budget, I want them to understand that cheap is not always a great alternative and quality does not have to be insanely expensive.
Oh, yea, I Can MAKE You Money Too
By hiring a designer, especially right before you plan on selling a home, you're going to get the most up to date styles, not trends, things that buyers are looking for in their forever homes. I'm here to ensure that your home is updated and looking to its fullest potential (as well as staging should you so choose) - in a way that is going to attract the exact kind of people who are going to fall in love and put in great offers on your home.
